Xiangtan is an industrial city on the Xiang River in eastern Hunan, part of the Chang-Zhu-Tan urban cluster with Changsha and Zhuzhou. It is celebrated as the birthplace of Mao Zedong, whose home village of Shaoshan is a major patriotic-tourism site, and of the painter Qi Baishi. The city was historically a busy river trading port for medicinal herbs. Today it is a base for heavy machinery, electrical equipment and steel manufacturing. Local dishes include Maojia braised pork associated with Shaoshan.
