Haining is a county-level city administered by Jiaxing on the north bank of the Qiantang River, world-famous for its dramatic tidal bore, when a wall of water surges upriver each lunar month and draws crowds to the town of Yanguan. It is China's leading centre for the leather and warp-knit textile trades, home to the sprawling Haining Leather City. The city was the birthplace of the martial-arts novelist Jin Yong (Louis Cha). For an international student, Haining offers a striking natural spectacle, a strong trade economy and a fast rail link to Hangzhou and Shanghai.
