Air Force Medical University, long known as the Fourth Military Medical University, is a military medical university in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, administered by the People's Liberation Army Air Force. Its earliest predecessor, the People's Medical College of the Northwest Military Region, was founded in 1941 and relocated to Xi'an in 1948; the current institution took shape in 1954 through the merger of the Fourth and Fifth Military Medical Universities, and it adopted its present name in 2017 after transferring to Air Force administration and absorbing the former Air Force Medical Research Institute. Its clinical medicine discipline is listed among China's Double First-Class construction disciplines, and the university is particularly known for aerospace medicine, given its role in supporting China's air force and space programmes. It offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral training in clinical medicine, stomatology, preventive medicine, pharmacy, and nursing, and its affiliated Xijing Hospital and Tangdu Hospital rank among the busiest and most advanced tertiary hospitals in northwest China. The university has produced notable contributions in fields such as digestive disease research and organ transplantation, alongside its core mission of training flight surgeons and aerospace medicine specialists. As a PLA-affiliated institution training military medical officers, Air Force Medical University does not offer general international student admission.
