📖 About the university

Xizang Agricultural and Animal Husbandry University is a public provincial university in Bayi Town, Bayi District of Nyingchi, in south-eastern Tibet. Its lineage begins with the Tibet Public School founded in 1958 in Xianyang, Shaanxi, from which a preparatory office was set up in Nyingchi in 1971; that year staff and students built the first campus by hand on the stony flats beside the Niyang River. It became the Nyingchi branch of Tibet Nationalities Institute in 1974 and was named Tibet Agricultural and Animal Husbandry College by State Council approval in 1978. In March 2001 it merged into a reconstituted Tibet University, then was re-established as an independent institution in June 2016, and in June 2025 the Ministry of Education approved its renaming to Xizang Agricultural and Animal Husbandry University. It holds eight first-level master's degree authorisation points and five professional master's authorisations, and offers 36 undergraduate and 21 specialist programmes spanning agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry, water resources, electrical power, ecology, environment, food science and engineering. Sitting at around 3,000 metres in one of the greenest valleys of the plateau, it is the only university in China devoted specifically to high-altitude agricultural and pastoral science.
