📖 About the university

Shanxi Institute of Technology is a provincial public undergraduate university in Shuozhou, Shanxi province, focused on engineering and applied technology. It was established on 25 January 2021, when China's Ministry of Education approved the separation of the Modern Science and Technology College — until then an independent college operating under Taiyuan University of Technology — and its conversion into a full public institution governed directly by the Shanxi provincial government. Two months later, in March 2021, the provincial government approved the merger of North University of China's Shuozhou campus into the new institute, which gave it an established physical campus and teaching staff from its first academic year rather than starting from nothing. That campus, on Changning Street in the Shuozhou Development Zone, occupies a planned 1,283 mu with about 330,000 square metres of building area, unusually spacious for a university of its age. Its academic structure reflects its parentage at Taiyuan University of Technology, Shanxi's strongest engineering school: mechanical engineering, materials science, electrical and information engineering, civil engineering and chemical engineering form the core, aligned with the coal, power-generation, metallurgy and equipment-manufacturing industries that dominate northern Shanxi. The institute does not hold 985, 211 or Double First-Class designation, but as a new public engineering school with a large modern campus and low living costs it offers an accessible route for students whose priority is applied engineering training in an industrial region rather than a famous name.
