Tongren University is a public applied undergraduate university in Tongren, eastern Guizhou, in the Wuling mountain region. Its origins trace to the Mingde School of 1920, and Tongren Normal College was upgraded to Tongren University by the Ministry of Education in 2006, gaining bachelor's-degree authorization in 2010. The university follows a mission of 'rooted in the mountains, serving the local area,' with strengths in teacher education, materials and chemical engineering, and ecology. It supports the development of the multi-ethnic Wuling border region.
