📖 About the university

NYU Shanghai is the first Sino-US joint research university with independent legal status, founded in 2012 by New York University together with East China Normal University and with the support of the city of Shanghai and the Pudong New District. It is the third degree-granting campus in the global NYU network, alongside New York and Abu Dhabi, and its students can spend semesters studying away at NYU's sites around the world. English is the language of instruction, but every student, both Chinese and international, is required to study and reach proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, giving the campus a deliberately bilingual and cross-cultural character. The student body of roughly 2,000 undergraduates and graduate students is split almost evenly, with about half from mainland China and the other half drawn from the United States and some seventy other countries. In spring 2023 the university moved into a purpose-built 14,000-square-metre campus of four interlocking towers set around an academic quad on the New Bund in the Qiantan district, replacing its original tower in Lujiazui. The curriculum is a broad liberal-arts model that is especially strong in business and finance, computer science, data science, economics, neural science, and interactive media arts, and its graduates are recruited by leading firms and graduate schools worldwide.

🌆 About Shanghai

Shanghai is China's largest city and its foremost financial and commercial centre, a global metropolis of some 25 million people at the mouth of the Yangtze River. It blends a cosmopolitan colonial heritage, seen along the historic Bund waterfront, with the futuristic skyline of the Lujiazui and Pudong financial districts across the river. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers, cool damp winters, and a rainy plum season in early summer. The city is famous for xiaolongtang soup dumplings, benbang cuisine, tree-lined former French Concession streets, and a dense cultural life of museums, theatres and galleries. An extensive metro network, two major international airports and the maglev train make it one of the most connected and internationally minded cities in Asia for students.
