Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine in Nanning, founded in 1956, is the leading institution for traditional Chinese medicine in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It teaches Chinese medicine, acupuncture and tuina, Chinese pharmacy, clinical medicine and nursing, and is distinctive for its research into Zhuang ethnic medicine and the medicinal herbs of subtropical south China. Its affiliated hospitals provide much of the region's traditional-medicine care. The university has a long tradition of educating international students, especially from Southeast Asia, in acupuncture and Chinese medicine. Located in green Nanning near the ASEAN gateway, it is a popular base for foreign students of Chinese medicine.
