📖 About the university

Hainan Medical University in Haikou is the only medical university on the tropical island province of Hainan, founded in 1947 and upgraded to full university status in 2023. Its defining strength is tropical medicine — the study of tropical and infectious diseases, tropical medicinal plants and emergency and disaster medicine suited to the island and the South China Sea region. The university runs several affiliated hospitals that anchor healthcare on Hainan and trains most of the island's doctors, nurses and pharmacists. It welcomes a large number of international students into its English-taught MBBS program, drawn by the tropical setting and clinical opportunities.
