📖 About the university
Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology is a public university in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, whose history traces back to the Bao'an County Normal School founded in 1959, with higher education beginning at the institution in 1982; the present university was formed in April 2002 through the merger of the Shenzhen Education College, Shenzhen Industrial School and Shenzhen Finance and Economics School into Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology, and in 2025 it was upgraded to full vocational-bachelor's status under its current English name. The university was designated a leading Chinese vocational college under the national "Double High Plan" in 2019, and in March 2023 its engineering discipline entered the top 1% globally in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database, the first higher vocational institution in mainland China to achieve this distinction. Its programmes are organised through schools including the School of Software Engineering, School of Computer Science, School of Mechatronics Engineering, School of Applied Foreign Languages and a Sino-German Robotics College developed in partnership with the state of Bavaria as part of a China–Germany vocational-education cooperation project. It is not part of the Project 985, Project 211 or Double First-Class programmes, but it is widely regarded as one of the strongest vocational-bachelor's universities in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area.
The university relocated to a purpose-built campus in Shenzhen's Longgang district in 2011, reusing facilities originally built for the Shenzhen Universiade Village, and it now leads the Shenzhen Eastern Vocational Education Group as well as an inter-university sports alliance in eastern Shenzhen. It also runs joint bachelor's-degree programmes with Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University and the Zhongshan campus of the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. Given Shenzhen's status as one of China's leading technology and innovation hubs, the university's focus on software, computer science and mechatronics engineering closely matches strong regional demand for skilled technical graduates. At present the university enrolls primarily domestic Chinese students and does not advertise a dedicated Chinese-language pathway for international applicants, though its Sino-German robotics partnership reflects a degree of international academic engagement uncommon among China's newer vocational-bachelor's universities.
