Yan'an University is a public comprehensive university in Yan'an, northern Shaanxi province, founded in 1937 and regarded as the first comprehensive university established by the Chinese Communist Party. It carries a distinctive revolutionary heritage and is nationally known for research on Party history and 'Yan'an studies.' Alongside the humanities it offers strong programs in chemistry, medicine and petroleum engineering, the last tied to the oilfields of northern Shaanxi.
