📖 About the university

Naval Medical University, still widely known under its historic name Second Military Medical University, is a military medical university in Yangpu District, Shanghai, affiliated with the People's Liberation Army Navy. It was founded in September 1949 as the East China Military Region People's Medical College, was renamed Shanghai Military Medical University in 1950, and became the Second Military Medical University in July 1951; it took its present name in June 2017, when it was transferred to naval administration, though it retains the Second Military Medical University name for external and hospital branding. Its basic medicine discipline is included in China's Double First-Class construction list, and the university trains naval medical officers as well as specialists in maritime and tropical medicine, pharmacy, nursing, psychology, and traditional Chinese medicine. It is organised into departments including basic medicine, naval and maritime military medicine, pharmacy, health service, nursing, and tropical medicine and public health, alongside a foreign-training department for overseas military exchange. The university's affiliated teaching hospitals in Shanghai, including Changhai Hospital and Changzheng Hospital, are among the city's major tertiary hospitals and treat large numbers of civilian patients. As a PLA institution focused on training naval medical officers and military health personnel, Naval Medical University does not run a general undergraduate admissions track for international students.

🌆 About Shanghai

Shanghai is China's largest city and its foremost financial and commercial center, a truly global metropolis on the East China Sea coast. With a metropolitan population of around 25 million, it blends colonial-era waterfront architecture with some of the tallest skyscrapers in the world. The climate is humid subtropical, bringing hot, humid summers and cool, damp winters. Its iconic sights include the riverside Bund, the Oriental Pearl Tower and Shanghai Tower in Pudong, the classical Yu Garden, and the bustling Nanjing Road. Local cuisine is known for xiaolongbao soup dumplings, pan-fried shengjianbao, and sweet red-braised pork. Shanghai runs one of the world's largest metro systems, two international airports, and high-speed rail to the entire country. For an international student, Shanghai offers world-class universities, a huge international community, and endless opportunity, balanced against a fast pace and the highest living costs in China.
