📖 About the university

Ningxia Institute of Science and Technology is a private undergraduate institution approved by the Ministry of Education, standing beside Xinghai Lake in the Dawukou district of Shizuishan, the industrial city at the northern end of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. It began in 1985 as Shizuishan United Vocational University and passed through the names Ningxia Shizuishan Workers' University and Ningxia Shizuishan Vocational and Technical College before being upgraded in March 2005 to a full-time regular undergraduate institution under its present name. In 2021 it was approved as a master's-degree-conferring unit, which is unusual for a private college in western China, and it now holds four professional master's authorisation points: electronic information, mechanical engineering, materials and chemical engineering, and accounting. Thirteen secondary colleges and departments — among them mechanical engineering, electrical and information engineering, science and chemical engineering, architecture and environment, economics and management, foreign languages, literature and arts, physical education, a modern civil aviation industry college and a school of Marxism — deliver 56 undergraduate programmes across the eight discipline categories of science, engineering, economics, management, literature, law, art and education. The campus occupies about 1,289 mu and enrolment has grown to more than 17,000 full-time students, making it by far the largest private university in Ningxia. What sets it apart institutionally is the support it receives: it is included in the Ministry of Education's programme pairing eastern universities with institutions in the west, is jointly built by the government of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and the Shizuishan municipal government, and receives counterpart support from Northeastern University and Zhejiang University of Technology. For a student from the Arab world the setting is worth noting — Ningxia is China's Hui Muslim autonomous region, with widely available halal food and a long history of contact with the Islamic world — though teaching here is in Chinese and the institute's intake is overwhelmingly domestic.

🌆 About Shizuishan

Shizuishan is a prefecture-level city in the far north of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, on the Yellow River between the Helan Mountains and the border with Inner Mongolia. It grew up around coal mining and heavy industry and is still nicknamed the coal city beyond the frontier. The climate is dry and continental, with cold winters, hot summers and very little rain. The Xinghai Lake wetland park in Dawukou district and the remains of the Ming Great Wall are its best-known sights.
