📜 About & history
The Tongxin Great Mosque is the oldest and largest historic mosque in Ningxia. It is believed to have originated in the 14th century during the Yuan dynasty on the site of a former Mongolian Buddhist temple, and was reconsecrated as a mosque in the early Ming; major renovations followed in the 16th century, 1791, and 1907, with an expansion in 1936. Built in Chinese brick-and-timber palatial style with dougong brackets and flying eaves rather than domes, it embodies a fusion of Hui and Han architecture. In October 1936 the Red Army held a public meeting here that founded the Yuhai County Hui Autonomous Government, the first Communist-era autonomous county; protected as a revolutionary site, it was the only major Islamic building in Ningxia to survive the Cultural Revolution and is a national key cultural heritage site.
