Changzhou's mosque was founded in the early Ming Hongwu period when a prefectural official, Yang Lianchuan, donated his residence; it was first called the 「True Teaching Temple」. Enlarged in the Wanli era, most of the old buildings were destroyed in the Taiping wars, and the hall was rebuilt under the Tongzhi and Guangxu reigns, then renovated in 1997. Because of the South Avenue pedestrian-mall development, it was relocated and rebuilt in new premises between 2003 and October 2006. The present Arab-style building rises mainly six storeys (eight in parts) to 36 m, with a 51 m minaret alongside, making it the largest mosque in Changzhou.

Five daily prayers are held, with the Friday congregational (Jumu'ah) prayer at midday drawing the largest crowd in this sizable hall.
