📜 About & history
The mausoleum marks the grave of Mahmud al-Kashgari, the 11th-century Karakhanid scholar who compiled the first comprehensive dictionary of the Turkic languages (Diwan Lughat al-Turk, 1072-74). A small mosque with painted wood-carved ceilings stands to the east of the tomb chamber, and the ensemble is one of the early Islamic buildings of Xinjiang.

Small active mosque used at prayer times; recitation in Uyghur/Arabic. Now chiefly a heritage and pilgrimage site with an entry ticket.

🚇 How to reach the mosque
Long-distance/rural buses from Kashgar toward Tashkurgan or Upal pass the site; shared taxis also available.
From Kashgar Grand Bazaar / Id Kah area, drive southwest on the G314 toward Upal; the mausoleum park is signposted in Upal town.
About 45 km southwest of Kashgar on the Karakoram Highway approach; roughly 45-60 minutes by taxi.
Upal has a lively Monday market. Uyghur halal food available in town. Combine with a Karakoram Highway trip toward Karakul Lake.
