Dongguan (East Gate) Mosque is the principal historic mosque of Luoyang's old city, first built in the Ming dynasty and enlarged during the Qianlong reign of the Qing. A charitable Islamic school was set up inside in 1822, the main hall and side rooms were built in the Xianfeng era, and further halls were added under Guangxu, with a women's mosque added in 1916. It was renovated with government support in 1981. In 2006 UNESCO recognised Luoyang as the Chinese starting point of the Silk Road, and the mosque's gate was marked as a symbolic monument.
