Dongda (East Great) Mosque is Kaifeng's most famous mosque, ranked first among the city's 'thirteen fang' congregations and honoured as the 'First Fang of Henan.' Hui Muslims had settled in this area from the late Tang and especially after the Song and Yuan dynasties. An imperial order rebuilt the mosque in 1407 (Ming Yongle 5), but it was destroyed by Yellow River flooding in the late Ming; the community rebuilt it in 1655 and restored it in 1846, and the present buildings preserve that Qing palace-style form. It was listed as a Major National Historical and Cultural Site in 2006.

In the old city near the commercial centre (Gulou / Madao Street area); Kaifeng has no metro, so use a taxi or map app for the nearest bus stop.
