As Hangzhou's Muslim population grew, the historic Phoenix Mosque became too small, so a large new mosque was built on the east side of the Grand Canal. Construction began in 2012 and it opened in May 2017, with about 16,998 square metres of floor space over five above-ground floors and one basement level.
