Changying Mosque

常营清真寺
📍 Beijing · Chaoyang District 🏛️ Ming Zhengde era (1506–1521)

📜 About & history

Changying Mosque was founded during the Zhengde reign of the Ming dynasty and rebuilt in the Qing Jiaqing period, with a surviving 1796 restoration stele. It was damaged during the Cultural Revolution, being turned into a foundry and materials workshop, then gradually repaired and rebuilt after 1979 and listed as a Chaoyang District protected cultural site in 1986. Major expansion projects followed in 1998 and 2002, with the largest reconstruction completed in October 2004. Today it covers more than 8,400 square meters and is the largest mosque in Beijing's suburbs, holding hand-copied Qur'ans and other historic artifacts.
