Zhenjiang

Zhenjiang is a historic riverside city in Jiangsu province where the Grand Canal meets the Yangtze River, famous nationwide for its aromatic black vinegar. With a metropolitan population of around three million, it is a mid-sized, walkable city rich in classical Chinese literary and religious history. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and cool, damp winters. Its landmarks cluster on three scenic hills by the river, above all Jinshan Temple, celebrated in the legend of the White Snake, along with Jiaoshan and Beigushan hills and the old Xijindu ferry street. Local cuisine is distinctive, known for crab-meat soup dumplings, pot-cover noodles, and dishes built around the city's prized Hengshun vinegar. Zhenjiang has no metro, but its high-speed rail station puts Nanjing and Shanghai within easy reach, and Nanjing Lukou International Airport, about 70 km away, is the nearest airport. For an international student, Zhenjiang offers a calm, affordable, and scenic setting with deep history and quick connections to the larger cities of the Yangtze Delta.
