Taicang is a county-level city administered by Suzhou on the Yangtze estuary, historically the port from which the admiral Zheng He set sail on his great voyages in the early 1400s. Today it is best known as 'China's hometown of German enterprises', hosting hundreds of German companies, especially precision manufacturers, and running a German-style dual vocational training system. The town of Shaxi preserves classic canal-side streets. For an international student, Taicang offers an internationally minded economy, riverside history and a location just north of Shanghai.
