Shaoguan

In Guangdong province

Shaoguan sits in northern Guangdong where the North River is formed, a gateway between the Pearl River Delta and inland China. It is famous for Mount Danxia, the type locality of Danxia landform and a UNESCO World Heritage site of red sandstone peaks. Nanhua Temple nearby is a cradle of Chan (Zen) Buddhism associated with the Sixth Patriarch Huineng. The area is strongly Hakka in culture and cuisine, with a mild, humid subtropical climate. An airport and rail links connect it to Guangzhou and beyond, and the surrounding forests draw hikers and students seeking nature close to the metropolis.
