Sanming is a mountainous prefecture in central-western Fujian, an industrial city built up around iron, steel and forestry after 1949. It is the birthplace of Shaxian snacks, a nationwide chain phenomenon of inexpensive Fujianese fast food. Taining county holds a UNESCO Global Geopark famous for its Danxia red-rock landforms and the boat-toured Golden Lake. The region is heavily forested and known for bamboo and traditional papermaking. Sanming markets itself as a pioneer of medical and ecological reforms in China.
