Pingxiang

In Jiangxi province

Pingxiang is a compact prefecture in far western Jiangxi on the Hunan border, long known as a coal-mining and ceramics center. Its Anyuan colliery was the site of a famous 1922 railway and mine workers' strike, an important episode in early Chinese labor and revolutionary history. The city's crowning natural draw is Wugong Mountain, celebrated for high alpine meadows, sea-of-clouds vistas and popular camping. Pingxiang cuisine is intensely spicy even by Jiangxi standards. Coal, industrial ceramics and eco-tourism drive the local economy.
