Nanchang

Nanchang is the capital of Jiangxi province and a city of major significance in modern Chinese history as the birthplace of the People's Liberation Army. With a metropolitan population of around six million, it sits on the Gan River near vast Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater lake. The climate is humid subtropical and notably hot, with very hot, humid summers and cool, damp winters. Its most celebrated landmark is the ancient Tengwang Pavilion overlooking the river, alongside Bayi Square with its 1927 Uprising Museum and the nearby wetlands of Poyang Lake. Jiangxi cuisine is spicy and rice-noodle-focused, with Nanchang stir-fried rice noodles and mixed banfen among the local favorites. A growing metro network, Changbei International Airport, and high-speed rail connect it to Wuhan, Changsha, and Hangzhou.
