The largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Gelug school in Inner Mongolia, known in Tibetan as Badgar, 'white lotus'. Founded in the Kangxi reign, it was greatly enlarged in 1749 and again under the Qianlong, Jiaqing, Daoguang and Guangxu emperors. It comprises six great halls, three residences for reincarnate lamas and dozens of whitewashed monks' houses stepped up the valley slope in pure Tibetan style, with no surrounding wall. It is ranked with the Potala Palace in Tibet, Kumbum Monastery in Qinghai and Labrang Monastery in Gansu as one of China's four great Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, and preserves a library and a rare collection of murals, statues and ritual objects. It is a national 4A scenic area.
