One of the most important sacred mountains of Taoism and a birthplace of the religion, where the philosopher Zhang Ling founded the doctrine of Chinese Taoism in 142 CE. The mountain is renowned for its tranquil forested peaks, ancient Taoist temples and shaded hiking paths. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2000 together with the neighbouring Dujiangyan irrigation system.
