ℹ️ About
A living residential quarter in the old town of Yining (Ghulja) in the Ili Valley, home to Uyghur, Uzbek, Hui and other communities. Conservation work began in 2007, it opened to visitors in 2008 and was rated a national 4A scenic area in 2014. More than 300 Qing- and Republic-era buildings and thousands of traditional courtyards painted in blue and turquoise have earned it the nickname 'museum of folk houses'. Its signature experience is the decorated horse carriage, the local 'ma di', that carries visitors through the lanes, alongside family homes open for hospitality, bakeries and tea houses. In 2024 it was renamed the Yili Old Town Cultural Tourism Area as part of its bid for 5A status.
